Guys I have zero (0) (zero) personal experience with addiction I really hope I’m doing the subject matter justice asadfghj
On the one hand, I believe in “write what you know;” on the other hand, I also believe half the fun of writing is learning new things. If everyone wrote 100% from personal experience, every book would be an autobiography. So I include the themes I want, but I try not to dwell on the things I don’t have the experience for so I can get out of the way of the voices that do.
This is a big issues right now when it comes to depictions of POC or LGBTQ+ characters in mass media right now. Straight white guys are free to write about non-straight white guys, but they can’t write about being in those minority groups. I’ll include characters of color for days (call me racist but black girls are way prettier and more fun to draw than white girls) but I don’t have the authority to write about racism without collaborating with someone. And at that point, why collaborate when I can just lift up their work instead?
One trope I ESPECIALLY hate is people throwing around illness/mental illness for a cheap depressing backstory, so I’m really hoping I’m not doing that here lol. Seriously I can rant for HOURS about the trope of the terminally ill cancer patient in fiction (being a cancer survivor myself I have o p i n i o n s). If you actually want to hear that rant, stop by on one of my Twitch streams some time (shameless plug)
Why collaborate? Because you are author: they may not be. There are more people capable of helping you with writing about some minority groups than people capable of writing about minority groups from inside perspective.
I don’t know anything more about addiction than you do, but I’m glad you’re trying to do it well.
